Houston Battles No. 15 Oklahoma but Falls Just Short

Houston fans, if you’re into grit and grind, this week’s matchup had it all. The Cougars took on No. 15 Oklahoma and nearly pulled off an upset, but ultimately fell short, 16-12, in a defensive battle. Donovan Smith, bouncing back from a rough performance last week, came close to shocking the Sooners on their home turf. Let’s break it down.

Smith’s Redemption Story

Donovan Smith came back strong after a shaky outing against UNLV. Completing 24 of 28 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown, Smith’s accuracy and leadership gave Houston a real shot. While there was an interception, his performance was a night-and-day improvement from last week.

Defense Keeps Houston in the Game

Oklahoma, despite being the favorite, had a rough day offensively, and much of the credit goes to the Houston defense. Holding the Sooners to just 16 points was no small feat. Keith Cooper Jr. and Michael Patton each recorded a sack, while Jeremiah Wilson notched his first career interception, showcasing the defense's ability to disrupt Oklahoma's rhythm. Their aggressive play kept the Sooners in check and gave Houston a fighting chance throughout the game.

Missed Opportunities

Houston outgained Oklahoma with 318 total yards to their 249, but costly mistakes made the difference. A failed 2-point conversion after a stunning 44-yard TD pass to Joseph Manjack stung. Coach Willie Fritz acknowledged post-game, “We made mistakes at critical points.” A couple of those plays go differently, and Houston could’ve walked away with an upset.

Takeaway: Progress, But Work to Do

Houston showed heart and resilience after last week’s loss. Smith’s improvement and the defense’s strong showing are positives, but the team needs to learn how to finish in close games. There’s potential for a strong season ahead, but it’s back to work to clean up the details.
