 FOOTBALL 🪽🏈

A New Dawn for Boston College Football

Boston College football is kicking off a new era under head coach Bill O'Brien, and the early signs are promising. The Eagles made a statement in their season opener, defeating No. 10 Florida State 28-13. With a revamped roster and renewed energy, BC is ready to make some noise in the ACC this season.

Revamping the Offense

Bill O'Brien, who took over in mid-February, quickly implemented a new offensive philosophy. Against Florida State, the Eagles showcased a balanced attack that kept the Seminoles’ defense guessing. Junior quarterback Thomas Castellanos led the charge, racking up 263 rushing yards and completing 10 of 16 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. His versatility as a dual-threat quarterback was key to keeping the defense off balance.

Transfer running back Treshaun Ward, facing his former team, contributed 138 total yards, including a 13-yard touchdown reception. The offensive line, anchored by veteran Logan Taylor, created opportunities for both the run and pass game.

A Defense Reborn

On defense, Boston College brought relentless pressure. The front seven consistently disrupted Florida State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, forcing mistakes. Max Tucker’s 58-yard interception return was a game-changer, setting up a critical touchdown for BC. The secondary also stood strong, limiting Florida State’s explosive plays.

Despite being relatively young, the defensive line held its own, showing potential for the season ahead. The unit will need to continue developing, but their performance against a top-10 team is a great sign.

A Culture Shift Under O'Brien

O'Brien has already brought a new energy to Chestnut Hill, emphasizing discipline and resilience. The Eagles were efficient on third downs, converting 9 of 16 attempts, and won the turnover battle—key factors in the win. The players are fully buying into O'Brien’s system, and it’s evident on the field.

Off the field, O'Brien is equally focused on academics. After the game, Castellanos mentioned attending classes the next day, highlighting the program’s emphasis on developing well-rounded individuals.

Looking Ahead

Boston College now turns its attention to Duquesne. The challenge will be maintaining the intensity that carried them to victory over Florida State. With a balanced offense, a gritty defense, and a coach who knows how to win, the Eagles look poised for a strong run in the ACC.

The season is still young, but Boston College has already shown they have the talent and tenacity to compete at the highest level. Under O'Brien’s leadership, the Eagles could become one of the surprise teams of 2024. The future looks bright on Chestnut Hill.

SOCCER 🪽⚽️

Soccer Soars for Boston College

It’s been an electric start for both the Boston College men’s and women’s soccer teams, and they’re not wasting any time making waves. From nail-biting finishes to dominant displays, the Eagles are showing they’re ready to bring the heat this season. Here’s how it all went down in their season openers.

Men’s Soccer: Ekeland’s Firepower Earns BC a Draw

Talk about a season opener! The men’s team came out firing with Ask Ekeland lighting up the scoreboard, bagging two goals in the first half like it was nothing. But in classic soccer fashion, the match wasn’t over till it was over. Iona stormed back in the second half to tie the game 2-2. Despite the draw, the Eagles showed some serious grit, holding the advantage in shots on goal and setting the stage for a battle against Providence next. Buckle up, BC fans—the season’s just getting started.

Women’s Soccer: Richards’ Solo Strike Seals the Win

Meanwhile, the women’s squad wasn’t about to be outdone. Ella Richards stepped up big-time, netting the game-winner to give BC a 1-0 victory over Jacksonville. This wasn’t just any goal—it was all about timing and execution, with Bella Douglas serving up the perfect assist. And let’s not forget the stone-cold defense led by goalkeeper Wiebke Willebrandt, who notched her fourth consecutive season-opening shutout. Head coach Chris Watkins snagged his first win with the Eagles, and this team looks ready to keep the momentum going as they take on Merrimack next.

TOP FLIGHT EAGLE 🪽🤩

Ask Ekeland earns Top Flight Eagle honors after an impressive performance in Boston College's season opener. Ekeland was the go-to guy, scoring both of the Eagles' goals in their 2-2 draw against Iona. This marks his first multi-goal game since transferring to BC, and he’s quickly establishing himself as the offensive leader the team can rely on this season.

VOLLEYBALL 🪽🏐

Boston College Volleyball Shines with Perfect BC Invitational Record

Schroder and Ross led with 16 kills each, while Haggerty added eight blocks. Riddle contributed 17 digs, and Lambros tallied 29 assists.

In the sweep over Iona, junior Anna Herrington had a career-high seven blocks and seven kills. Ross led the offense with 13 kills on a .455 hitting percentage, while freshman Sequoia Layne added seven kills off the bench. On defense, Riddle and Brooklyn Yelland played key roles, with Yelland leading with 10 digs. Freshman Aubrey Moore chipped in with 17 assists in her debut.

Tournament Honors

Three Eagles were named to the All-Tournament team: Halle Schroder, Audrey Ross, and Julia Haggerty, who was also named MVP. Schroder finished with 28 kills, six aces, and 29 digs. Ross led with 41 kills and a .410 hitting percentage, while Haggerty contributed 13 kills and 23 blocks.

Boston College’s performance at the BC Invitational, coupled with their season-opening sweep, highlights a strong start and sets a high standard for the remainder of the season.
