Missed Chances Cost Mountaineers in Backyard Brawl

West Virginia put up a fight, but the 107th Backyard Brawl ended in heartbreak as Pitt pulled off a 38-34 comeback win. The Mountaineers were in control for most of the game, but in typical rivalry fashion, it all came down to the final minutes.

The Final Blow

With just under five minutes left, WVU was sitting on a comfortable 10-point lead. But Pitt had other plans. Redshirt freshman Eli Holstein led a 77-yard drive, and with just 32 seconds left, Derrick Davis Jr. punched it in for the game-winning touchdown. Our defense just couldn’t keep up, letting Pitt march down the field and take it away right at the end.

Missed Opportunities

Let’s face it, we had our chances to close this one out. After failing to convert on third down late in the fourth, we handed the ball back to Pitt, and they made the most of it. Oh, and don’t forget the blocked punt earlier in the game that got returned for a touchdown—that one hurt and gave Pitt the momentum they needed.

Bright Spots for WVU

Despite the tough loss, it wasn’t all doom and gloom. Garrett Greene looked solid, throwing for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and tacking on 49 rushing yards. CJ Donaldson did his thing on the ground, leading the charge with 79 rushing yards and a touchdown. Freshman Rodney Gallagher III gave us a spark too, with a 33-yard catch that set up an early score.

We outrushed Pitt 191-78, but the inability to finish the game took the shine off what could have been a statement win.

Looking Ahead

Sitting at 1-2, WVU has a tough test ahead in their Big 12 opener against Kansas. The Jayhawks are coming off a loss to UNLV, so you can bet they’ll be looking to turn things around. For us, it’s time to regroup, fix those key errors, and come out swinging as conference play begins.
