West Virginia Finds Its Stride in Albany Rout: Building Momentum for a Tough Season Ahead

The West Virginia Mountaineers bounced back in Week 2, dismantling the Albany Great Danes 49-14 in Morgantown. After a tough season opener against Penn State, head coach Neal Brown’s squad showed marked improvement on the scoreboard and in their execution. While there’s still room for growth, this win indicates that the Mountaineers are starting to find their identity—especially on offense.

Garrett Greene’s Evolution: From Mistakes to Mastery

Quarterback Garrett Greene displayed noticeable growth after a shaky Week 1. Greene completed 17 of 23 passes for 236 yards, adding 68 rushing yards and four total touchdowns—three through the air and one on a 40-yard run before halftime. His improved decision-making and command of the offense were evident, as he led the team on a dominant 99-yard scoring drive to start the third quarter.

Ground Game Dominance: Dual Threats in the Backfield

The Mountaineers' ground game was a highlight, with CJ Donaldson rushing for 125 yards and Jahiem White adding 100. Together, they powered a rushing attack that tallied 305 yards, controlling the tempo and wearing down Albany’s defense.

Defensive Growing Pains: Lessons Learned from Albany

While the offense excelled, West Virginia’s defense showed some vulnerability, especially in the secondary. Albany’s quarterback Myles Burkett threw for 306 yards, exposing some weaknesses. However, the defense held firm when it mattered, tightening up after allowing two long passes early in the second half.

Special Player Spotlight: Rodney Gallagher

Rodney Gallagher, a wide receiver, impressed as a two-way player. He caught three passes for 34 yards and contributed on defense with a solo tackle and a pass breakup, showcasing his versatility and football IQ.

Moving Forward: The Path Ahead

The Mountaineers still face tough challenges, especially as Big 12 play approaches. While the defense needs to improve against the deep ball, the team’s dominant rushing attack, Greene’s development, and contributions from young players like Gallagher provide hope for the season ahead.
